It's the rhetoric of the right that support for the troops involved in fighting a war necessarily precludes criticism of that war. This is, of course, rubbish, and I have no problem with being sympathetic for the ordinary soldiers in Iraq whilst condemning the politicians who have sent them on an illegal colonialist venture. As long as soldiers do their duty, they have my support. Of course, they must face robust criticism where they fail their duty, but even in regard to such things as the Paras' poor record in Northern Ireland, I place a fair portion of the blame upon the leaders who deployed elite shock troops in a peacekeeping situation in the first place.
One of the reasons why I have slightly more time for Prince Andrew than for his siblings is that he made no attempt to avoid going to the Falklands with his ship, and indeed flew rather dangerous Exocet-decoy missions. As I say, I expect members of the Armed Forces to do their duty, and that includes members of the Royal Family. By all accounts, Prince Harry seems to agree.
