Here's one of my very few rules.

Bar me from commenting on your journal and I defriend you. Tell me I am patronizing you by disagreeing with your traumadrama in as level-headed a way as I can manage and I will defriend you. Act in a way that is self-indulgently divisive of a community I care about and I will defriend you. Elevate your gut feelings above other people's and then turn around and accuse me of bullying you when I point this out, and accuse me of calling you a bully when I have taken great care to do no such thing, and have simply at all times called for dialogue, and I will defriend you.

Some people just are not worth the time.

It's always odd, the things people think they can get away with.

I spent a few years living with someone who was a consumate envelope pusher. She simply couldn't see anything wrong with it, but never seemed to connect her behaviour with the way people treated her.

I loved her dearly, but there was literally no way I could point out the connection to her.

Very odd.

Oh, I bet I know who you're talking about. I read that exchange, and you were perfectly reasonable.

I've blocked, I think, one person as a result of something he posted in my journal. I assumed he would defriend me in response, given that I had declared that he was not my friend and that I would not speak to him. (I've also put in a few pre-emptive blocks, mostly of known trolls who were infesting my friends list.)

I am slowly compiling a list of Rules for adult (i.e. over-40) life.

Rule #1 is, of course, Don't Die. Breaking that one is a bad idea.

But coming up close in second place, is Rule #2: Life's too short to put up with fuckwits.

(This can sometimes conflict with Rule #3: be loyal to your friends, but I figure a corollary of Rule #2 is "don't have fuckwits for friends in the first place".)

I agree with almost all of this. I can't agree with the last sentence because it conflicts with one of my own basic rules (one of the very few I'm absolutely sure about), but restated as "I choose not to devote my time where I feel it's wasted" it works for me.
