I liked the book as well. I found it because the author (David Downing?) also wrote Shoes Outside the Door, a superb nonfiction narrative of the way the San Francisco Zen Center fell apart when its charismatic leader was caught with his pants down.

I also saw a stage version in San Francisco 3-4 years ago, which was a lot of fun. I hope the movie gets around.
