Unthought experience is not as slow.
A steady pulse of meter is, we know,
divided into moments when we rhyme
and so has shape. We live out our quick years
from day to day, they vanish into gray
unless we give each evanescent day
a chapter head before it disappears
Our lives are short. They will be shorter still
if we live them asleep. So making art
or love or speeches – these will help us chart
our way back through our lives when we are ill
and close to death. There's no eternity
but time regained and long in memory.
