Music has enemies. Musicians though
have cause to fear the ones who love them too.
Perhaps because what they show is so true
that those who listen best fear what they show.
Orpheus and the Bachantes both knew grief
his was a slow lament and theirs were howls
torn from their souls, their bones, their skin, their bowels,
passion so fierce it could know no relief
and his song offered thought and peace and balm
and so they tore him so they could not hear.
It is release from self that people fear
and letting go what's lost feels like deep harm
to those not ready. Music's dangerous
because it cures the mad, the sad, and us.
