Facebook is a social site. You go there, and place a photograph and various personal details. Other people do the same. You link up to friends, and friends of friends, in pretty much the same way that you create a friends page in LJ. There is little more to it than that - you can send messages to people, but basically it is LJ's endless pyramid of contacts feature without, y'know, that time-consuming blogging feature.
