My hard disc is dying which is a large part of the problems of the last few days - an attempt at reinstalling XP made this definite. So I won't be around that much until tomorrow evening after I get my new kit. So it goes.

Weird that it should do the shut-down routine - presumably some sort of fail-safe? Or is there also a trojan problem?

When you reinstall don't forget to (1) make sure the firewall is on then (2) go straight to Microsoft and add all service packs etc. that have been issued since your installation disk was built. Do that BEFORE you install anything else, it'll save a shitload of time in the end.

This is wise and good advice. But lord, it makes me glad as hell to run Ubuntu, I tell you what. I mean, it is kind of like running apt-get upgrade after a fresh install and having to futz with the sound settings, but I kind of like to customize my box, call me wacky. It feels like a clean start.

The more I hear about Vista, the more certain I get that sooner or later I will be running Linux. But so far my XP boxes are holding up reasonably well, and I have too much invested in Windows software - stuff I need to work - to change over lightly.

No, as I know many people who have tried to go Linux-only but have been screwed by, for example, their need for Adobe Creative, I get it, but there is a significant security time advantage for Ubuntu these days, so it makes me happy as a home user, though I'm hoping there's finally video editing software that isn't Shake and thus 5000 dollars for Linux soon.
