I am still without my computer though I have a loaner for work and will probably manage to get it connected to the Internet at some point in the next couple of days. Probably about the same time I get my actual machine back, unless things go very badly.

(I did need a new hard disc - and got 200 g, and an external drive, and my disc burner - but there is still a problem. If I am lucky, it is the internal power supply - if not, something has gone very wrong with the BIOS....)

I'm not sure this will end up the cheapest way. I built my last windows box from bits, because it was very important to me to have it silent, and it ended up much more expensive than a dell or equivalent would have been. By the time you have put in a hard disk, a mother supply and a power board, you are approaching the 250 or so which a whole new box nowadays costs. (on rereading, 'mother supply' is obviously something all computer need. I'll let it stand.)

While it may be more expensive to roll your own, you will know what components there are in it (frex, Kingston or Crucial momory is far less likely to give you problems than whatever D*ll have stuck in their boxes that week).

Similarly, you will have a real copy of the Operating System, and not a "restore" disk which also includes lots and lots of incredibly useless third party applications (and in quite a few cases, spyware).

I have a spare power supply (350w) which you are welcome to, if no-one nearer has one.
