TANK GIRL

I am introducing a screening of this at the NFT at 6 next Monday 28th. A deeply flawed film for which I nonetheless have some real affection.

A deeply flawed film for which I have no affection whatever is Puffball, the new Nicholas Roeg film, adapted from a more or less awful Fay Weldon novel. With Miranda Richardson and Rita Tushingham doing stage Irish accents, and a lot of fertility magic, and a very silly plot that says something rather disturbingly nasty about women's resentment of each other, and Fay Weldon's theories about sex and gender. Every so often, vulvas clench and white stuff floods into them - no really, on screen and everything - Technicolour Penisvision. I hated it so much that I decided to ring up and cry off reviewing it, rather than have to watch it to the end. There are very few films that I hate that much - it joins a select company that includes Bloodhounds of Broadway and Showgirls.

Can we have a full list of the offending films? Or at least a top ten?

I can stomach Showgirls but A.I. is a film that I hope I never see again.

I'm impressed! I actually bought Showgirls in a Blockbuster sell-off for less than a quid, and I doubt I'll ever watch it. Couldn't. AWFUL.

Ha ha! Lightweight!

With Tank Girl, I had the obstacle of being deeply and profoundly in love with the source material, which was obviously never going to make it to the screen without being mutilated beyond recognition. And I don't really blame the film-makers for that; the original comic was so formless that a faithful adaptation would have been incomprehensible. What made it to the screen was a bit of a mess, but it had its charms.

Wow, PUFFBALL must be amazingly awful from the unanimous drubbing it's had. I... must see it.

Yes, I strangely enjoyed when I first saw it all those years ago. Became quite a fan of the director, Rachel Talalay, who has gone onto directing all manner of good stuff - including Randall and Hopkirk Deceased (the Jim Reeves/Bob Mortimer version).
