My friend Veronica [livejournal.com profile] vschanoes has an amazing essay here on Gene Kelly and fancying the pants off people we see on screen.

Movie dance sequences

Thanks for the recommendation; that was a great essay.

My favourite movie dance sequence of all time in the Nicholas Brothers' number in 'Stormy Weather' (1943), which Fred Astaire thought was the greatest ever movie dance sequence, too. I'm sure you're familiar with it, but if not there are several clips on You Tube.

Oh that was wonderful.

The explorations of the musicals were great, the tangential comments were fascinating and I want to go and watch "Singin' In the Rain" again and crush on Donald O'Connor some more.

Personally I'm a Fred Astaire fan myself - he did it all so lightly - but Gene was also excellent. I'm just not as fond of people who say "Look at me!" all the time.
