Wife

She loves him for his shoulders not his songs
Line of his jaw, the funny little snort
he makes when sleeping. She knows that she ought
to care more for his art, but that belongs

to the long list of things she hopes to mend
in years to come. She wants to love him more
than Ma Calliope, that awful bore.
She's made an effort, tried to be her friend

but knows she would not be his mother's choice.
Perhaps she'll try to charm the bitch with food.
If she has a sweet tooth, that would be good,
or honey in tisane, to help her voice.

So off she goes to Aristaeus' hive
which is the last place she will go alive.

I have enjoyed all of the Orpheus poems, but I just had to comment and say this is my favourite. I think it is giving voice to Eurydice, who is often merely prize or prey. Beloved prize, perhaps, but still something to win or reclaim.

I wish I knew what myth this was. Somehow looking it up seems likely to spoil it (or rather my reaction).

Ah now I see -- I've been away so long from this that i didn't know you were treating Orpheus in multiple poems. I will have to catch up.
