Tartarus

Hell shows him those dead punished for their pride,
for over-reaching. Bad guest and bad kin,
Ixion fixed to a fire-wheel to spin
Eternally. And Sisyphus who lied

to every god he met, pushes his ball
uphill over and over. The bad wives
who killed their husbands wash their bloody knives
in leaky basins. Dreadful sinners all

dreadfully punished. And Orpheus played
and as he sang, the fire-wheel was still,
the basin filled, the ball rolled up the hill.
He felt for them, as one who is afraid

he has transgressed too far. Seeing this crew
Fears he deserves to suffer as they do.
