Rehearsal

Not broken music, music still half-built,
its girders and its scaffolding on view.
Each repetition shows us something new
that we half-heard before, but with a tilt

that brings it ever closer to the best.
Perfect because imperfect, not yet fixed,
a growing thing with flaws and fineness mixed.
And after some few hours they take a rest

Eat chocolate, gossip, joke and flirt and tease.
Be human in the time between the notes
that sound as if they came from other throats
than human, sounds of gods, or brass, or trees.

Gold webs of sound are woven on this loom
ten people working in a little room.

May I take this home with me? I came across this entry at random, and it comes very close to the reasons why (amateur) orchestra rehearsals are the best thing in my week. People often write about music (like dancing about architecture, they say) but rarely about rehearsal, which is the good part. Thank you!

Take it home - print it out - use it wherever. Just credit it...

I'm a poet with musician friends, and I listen to what they say about these things. This was written during an actual rehearsal, which is why some moments of it are so specific

Thanks! I'll make sure to keep your name attached to it. Listening to rehearsals can be at least as much fun as participating in them...
